Alqamah narrates: A woman from the tribe of Banu Asad came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud. She said: I have come to know that you say: The woman who tattoos and the one who gets tattooed, the one who plucks hair and the one who gets hair plucked, are cursed. Whereas I have read the entire Qur'an. I did not find in it what you state. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You would have found it, but you do not have knowledge. She asked: What is that? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Have you not read this verse: "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you from, abstain from it." The woman replied: Yes. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is what is meant. The woman said: I think one of your noble wives also does such a thing. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go inside the house and see her. The woman went inside the house. She examined, but did not find anything like that. Sayyiduna Abdullah asked the woman: Did you see anything like that? She replied: No. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you had seen any such thing, then (i.e. a wife who did such a thing) would not have remained with me.
