Hadith 5489

أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ سَوَادَةَ ، أَنَّ أَبَا النَّجِيبِ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ رَجُلاً قَدِمَ مِنْ نَجْرَانَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيْهِ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ، فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ ، فَرَجَعَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى امْرَأَتِهِ ، فَحَدَّثَهَا ، فَقَالَتْ : إِنَّ لَكَ شَأْنًا ، فَارْجِعْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَلْقِ الْخَاتَمَ ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَأْذَنَ أَذِنَ لَهُ ، وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَعْرَضْتَ عَنِّي ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّكَ جِئْتَنِيَ وَفِي يَدِكَ جَمْرَةٌ مِنْ نَارٍ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، لَقَدْ جِئْتُ إِذًا بِجَمْرٍ كَثِيرٍ ، وَكَانَ قَدْ قَدِمَ بِحُلِيٍّ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَا جِئْتَ بِهِ غَيْرُ مُغْنٍ عَنَّا شَيْئًا ، إِلا مَا أَغْنَتْ عَنَّا حِجَارَةُ الْحَرَّةِ ، وَلَكِنَّهُ مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا " ، فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ : اعْذُرْنِي فِي أَصْحَابِكَ ، لا يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّكَ سَخِطْتَ عَلَيَّ بِشَيْءٍ ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَعَذَرَهُ ، وَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّ الَّذِي كَانَ مِنْهُ إِنَّمَا كَانَ لِخَاتَمِهِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from Najran came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was wearing a gold ring. The Prophet (peace be upon him) turned his face away from him. He did not ask the man any question. The man returned to his wife and told her about this. She said: There must be some issue with you. Go back to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and remove the ring. When the man asked for permission to enter, the Prophet (peace be upon him) granted him permission. He greeted the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied to his greeting. The man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Why did you turn your face away from me earlier? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When you came to me, there was a burning ember of fire in your hand. The man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), then I have brought many embers with me. The man had brought several pieces of jewelry from Bahrain. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You have not brought anything without which we cannot manage, however, this is merely the provision of worldly life. The man said: Please accept my apology. Let your companions not think that you are angry with me for any other reason. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up, announced that he had accepted his apology, and clarified that his displeasure was only because of his ring.
