Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hanzaliyah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Uyainah and Aqra’ asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) for something. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) to write that thing for them. He did so, and then the Prophet (peace be upon him) sealed it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him to hand it over to both of them. Uyainah inquired, “What is in it?” Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, “It contains what I was commanded to write.” Uyainah accepted it and tied it in his turban, but Aqra’ said, “Should I take a document about which I do not even know what is written in it? This would be like a document of deception.” Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) informed the Prophet (peace be upon him) about what both of them had said. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came out for some of his work, and he passed by a camel that was tied near the door of the mosque. This was in the early part of the day. When he passed by in the latter part of the day, the camel was still in the same condition. The Prophet (peace be upon him) inquired, “Where is the owner of this camel?” He was searched for, but not found. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Fear Allah regarding these animals. Ride them when they are healthy, and eat them when they are fat.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him), expressing displeasure, said, “Whoever asks for something while he already possesses that which makes him independent, he is only increasing the coals of Hell for himself.” That person asked, “O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by that which makes him independent?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “His food for the morning and evening.”
Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him), “His food for the morning and evening,” means: he should always do so. “Ride them when they are healthy,” is evidence that regarding a sick and weak she-camel, it is necessary to refrain from riding her until she becomes healthy. And the statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him), “Eat them when they are fat,” is evidence that regarding a weak she-camel that has no marrow, it is preferable not to sacrifice her until she becomes fat and healthy.
