Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) once wore a cloak made of silk which had been presented to him as a gift, then he took it off. He sent it to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Why did you take it off?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibreel came to me. He forbade me from it." The narrator states: Then Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to you weeping. He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You yourself disliked it and then you gave it to me." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did not give it to you so that you would wear it. I gave it to you so that you could sell it." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sold it for two thousand dirhams.
