Hadith 5418

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزْوَةِ أَنْمَارٍ ، قَالَ : فَبَيْنَمَا أَنَا نَازِلٌ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ ، إِذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، هَلُمَّ إِلَى الظِّلِّ ، قَالَ : فَنَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ جَابِرٌ : فَقُمْتُ إِلَى غِرَارَةٍ لَنَا ، فَالْتَمَسْتُ فِيهَا ، فَوَجَدْتُ فِيهَا جِرْوَ قِثَّاءٍ ، فَكَسَرْتُهُ ، ثُمَّ قَرَّبْتُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مِنْ أَيْنَ لَكُمْ هَذَا ؟ فَقُلْتُ : خَرَجْنَا بِهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ ، قَالَ جَابِرٌ : وَعِنْدَنَا صَاحِبٌ لَنَا نُجَهِّزُهُ لِيَذْهَبَ يَرْعَى ظَهَرْنَا ، قَالَ : فَجَهَّزْتُهُ ، ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَذْهَبُ فِي الظَّهْرِ ، وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدَانِ لَهُ قَدْ خَلُقَا ، قَالَ : فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : أَمَا لَهُ ثَوْبَانِ غَيْرُ هَذَيْنِ ؟ قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، لَهُ ثَوْبَانِ فِي الْعَيْبَةِ كَسَوْتُهُ إِيَّاهُمَا ، قَالَ : فَادْعُهُ ، فَمُرْهُ فَلْيَلْبَسْهُمَا ، قَالَ : فَدَعَوْتُهُ ، فَلَبِسَهُمَا ، ثُمَّ وَلَّى يَذْهَبُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَا لَهُ ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ عُنُقَهُ ، أَلَيْسَ هَذَا خَيْرًا ؟ فَسَمِعَهُ الرَّجُلُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ " ، فَقُتِلَ الرَّجُلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ : هَكَذَا كَانَتْ نِيَّةُ الْمُصْطَفَى صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْبِدَايَةِ ، وَزَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ؛ لأَنَّ جَابِرًا مَاتَ سَنَةَ تِسْعٍ وَسَبْعِينَ ، وَمَاتَ أَسْلَمُ مَوْلَى عُمَرَ فِي إِمَارَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ سَنَةَ بِضْعٍ وَخَمْسِينَ ، وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ مَرْوَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ ، وَكَانَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ إِذْ ذَاكَ ، فَهَذَا يَدُلُّكَ عَلَى أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرًا وَهُوَ كَبِيرٌ ، وَمَاتَ زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ سَنَةَ سِتٍّ وَثَلاثِينَ وَمِئَةَ ، وَقَدْ عُمِّرَ .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the occasion of the expedition of Anmar, we set out with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Once, we camped under a tree. During this, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came. The narrator says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Please come to the shade." The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) dismounted (from his ride). Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I got up and went to my provision bag. I searched in it and found a cucumber. I broke it and then presented it to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked, "Where did you get this from?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! We brought it with us from Madinah Munawwarah." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We had a companion to whom we would prepare provisions, and he would take our riding animals to graze. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I prepared his provisions, then he loaded them on his back and set off. He had two sheets on his body which had become old. The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) looked at him and asked, "Does he have no other clothes besides these two sheets?" Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! He has two more garments in the provisions which I gave him to wear." The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Call him and instruct him to wear those clothes." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I called him, he wore those two garments, then he was about to leave when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "What is wrong with him? May Allah strike his neck—is this not better?" That person heard this and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), in the way of Allah?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "In the way of Allah." Then that person was martyred in the way of Allah.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This was the initial intention of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Zaid bin Aslam heard hadith from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) because Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in 79 AH, and Aslam passed away around 50 AH during the rule of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Marwan bin Hakam performed his funeral prayer, who was then the governor of Madinah Munawwarah, so this will guide you to this matter. He heard hadith from Sayyiduna Jabir; he was an elderly man, while Zaid bin Aslam passed away in 136 AH. He was of quite advanced age.
