Abdur Rahman bin Harith narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering a sermon. He said: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Avoid the root of all evils, for there was a man among the people before you who used to worship and kept himself apart from the people. A woman fell in love with him. She sent her servant to him and said: We are calling you regarding a testimony. As soon as he entered her house, the doors were closed upon him until he reached a woman who was extremely beautiful and was sitting. There was also a boy with her and a decanter in which there was wine. The woman said: We did not call you for any testimony, rather I called you so that you either kill this boy, or commit adultery with me, or drink a cup of this wine. If you do not obey me, I will scream loudly and disgrace you. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the man saw that there was no other way out, he said: Give me a cup of wine. The woman gave him a cup of wine. He said: Give me a little more. After that, he kept drinking wine until he committed adultery with the woman and also killed the boy. (The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:) So avoid wine, for by Allah, faith and wine-drinking can never coexist in a person's heart. One of them will expel the other.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narrator Umar bin Sa'id Sarij is among the trustworthy narrators of the people of Madinah, from whom Abdur Rahman bin Ishaq Madani has narrated traditions.
