Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us, three hundred horsemen, (on an expedition). Our commander was Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). We were lying in wait for a caravan of the Quraysh. We stayed on the coast for fifteen days. We were overtaken by severe hunger to the extent that we began to eat leaves. Because of this, the army was named "the army of leaves." Then the sea threw out a large creature called "ambergris." We ate its meat for fifteen days until our bodies became strong. We used its fat as oil. Then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) took one of its ribs. He selected the tallest camel and the tallest man in the army. He made the man ride the camel, and the man passed under the rib as a result. This is also narrated with another chain. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had given us a bag in which there were dates. When they finished, we felt their absence, then someone would bring something. In this narration, these words are also present: We extracted so much fat from the eyes of that (sea creature). When we presented ourselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he asked us: Do you have any of its (meat) with you?
