Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Three legal rulings became evident regarding Barirah. When she was freed, she was given the choice to stay with her husband or to separate from him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The right of wala’ (allegiance) belongs to the one who sets free. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the house and saw that meat was being cooked in a pot. When bread and another household dish were presented to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he asked: Did I not see meat in the pot? The people replied: Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but that meat was given to Barirah as charity, and you do not eat charity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It was charity for her, but for us it is a gift.
