‘Ubadah bin Walid narrates: My father and I went to the Ansar to seek knowledge before they passed away. The first person we met was Sayyiduna Abu Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him). His slave was also with him. Sayyiduna Abu Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) was wearing a sheet and a Ma’afiri sheet. His slave was also wearing a sheet and a Ma’afiri sheet. My father said to him: I see signs of anger on your face. He replied: Yes, I was owed some money by so-and-so. I went to his house and asked: Is he here? The people of the house replied: No. Then his son came out to me. I asked: Where is your father? He said: He heard your voice and went inside. I said (addressing that man): Come out to me, I know where you are. He came out to me. I asked: Why were you compelled to hide? He said: By Allah, I will tell you and I will not lie to you. By Allah, I feared that if (I came before you) and spoke with you, I would have to lie to you. I would make a promise to you and then have to break it. You are a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) (and I do not feel it is right to behave with you in such a way). By Allah, I am a person in hardship. Sayyiduna Abu Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked: Is it really so, by Allah? He said: By Allah, it is so. Sayyiduna Abu Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then he took his document and erased it and said: If you are able to pay, then do so, otherwise it is forgiven from me. I bear witness that these two eyes of mine heard this and my heart preserved it. He pointed to his heart and said this. I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever gives respite to a person in hardship or forgives him (partially or completely), Allah Almighty will grant him His special shade.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The name of Sayyiduna Abu Yasar is Ka’b bin ‘Amr.
