Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three people with whom Allah Almighty will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He look at them with mercy, nor will He purify them, and for them there will be a painful punishment." I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Who are those people? They will surely be ruined and will suffer loss. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this statement, so I asked: Who are those people? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The person who lets his lower garment hang (out of pride), the person who reminds others of his favors, and the person who sells his goods by swearing false oaths." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The one who lets it hang" refers to the person who lets his lower garment hang out of arrogance, and the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The one who reminds of favors" refers to the person who reminds others of his favor at the time of paying the obligatory zakat.
