Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) consulted the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about giving as charity the land he owned in Thamgh. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Keep the original property with you and give its produce (in the way of Allah). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) specified it for the needy, travelers, those striving in the way of Allah, slaves, and the poor. He gave the supervisor of the property the right to eat from it himself and to feed others from it, as long as he was not accumulating wealth from it.
