أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ السَّامِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ مَوْلَى الْمُنْبَعِثِ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، " أَنَّ رَجُلا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الإِبِلِ ، قَالَ : " مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا ، فَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ ، وَتَرِدُ الْمَاءَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهَا بَاغِيهَا " ، وَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ " ، ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اعْرِفْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ، فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا ، فَعَرَفَ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ، فَأَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ ، وَإِلا فَهِيَ لَكَ " .
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: A man asked the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, about a lost camel. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: What do you have to do with it? Its belly is with it, its legs are with it. Leave it alone. It will eat the leaves of trees by itself and reach water, until its owner finds it. That man then asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about a lost goat. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Either you will find it, or your brother will find it, or a wolf will get it. Then that man asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about a found lost item. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Remember its number, its bag, and the string tied around its mouth. If its owner comes and tells you the sign of its number, bag, and string, then hand it over to him; otherwise, it is yours.
