Sayyiduna Ma’qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then, on the occasion of Hudaybiyyah, the people pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was under the tree. I was holding up a branch of that tree above the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). We did not pledge allegiance to death, rather, we pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that we would not flee. On that day, the number of people was one thousand four hundred. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The correct view is that the number of the noble Companions was one thousand five hundred, as Sa’id bin Musayyib has narrated.
