Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: When, on the occasion of (the Treaty of) Hudaybiyyah, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, made peace with the Quraysh, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: Write “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” So (the representative of Quraysh) Suhayl bin Amr said: We are not familiar with “the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”; write “In Your name, O Allah.” The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: Write this: “This is the agreement which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has made.” Suhayl said: If we knew that you, peace and blessings be upon him, are the Messenger of Allah, we would have followed you and not denied you; write your name with your lineage, that is, your father’s name. So the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: Write “Muhammad, son of Abdullah.” So he wrote (in the agreement): “Whoever from you (i.e., the polytheists of Makkah) comes to us, we will return him to you, and whoever from us (the Muslims) comes to you, we will let him stay with you.” The people said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Shall we grant them this (permission)? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever from us (becomes apostate and) goes to them, Allah the Exalted has distanced him, and whoever from them comes to us, and we return him, then Allah the Exalted will make for him relief and a way out.
