Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the House of Allah, he made a treaty with the people of Makkah that he (peace be upon him) would enter Makkah and stay there for three days. When he (peace be upon him) entered Makkah, he (peace be upon him) would have his weapons sheathed, and none of those entering with him (peace be upon him) would leave with him (peace be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) would not prevent any of his companions who wished to stay in Makkah from doing so. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): You will write down the agreement that has been settled between us, the agreement that Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), has made. The polytheists said: If we knew that you (peace be upon him) are the Messenger of Allah, we would pledge allegiance to you (peace be upon him). Write instead: Muhammad, son of Abdullah, has said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Erase it and write Muhammad, son of Abdullah. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will not erase it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Erase it and write Muhammad, son of Abdullah. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will never erase it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Show me its place, and I will erase it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) erased it and wrote Muhammad, son of Abdullah there. (The narrator says) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed there for three days. When the last part of the third day came, the people said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): The time of the condition set by your master is about to end, so ask him to leave. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him (peace be upon him) about this, and he (peace be upon him) said: Very well. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In the condition where they said that no one who entered with you (peace be upon him) will leave (Makkah) with you (peace be upon him), what is meant by this is: from their side, out of dislike, because it is impossible that they would not allow anyone who came with you (peace be upon him) to leave, i.e., a person who is among your (peace be upon him) companions.
