Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) related this hadith to me: On the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) began to say, "So-and-so is a martyr, so-and-so is a martyr," until they mentioned a certain man and said, "So-and-so is a martyr." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Never! I have seen him in the Hellfire because of a cloak which he had taken deceitfully (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) or because of an 'abaa (cloak)." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "O son of Khattab! Go and announce among the people that only the people of faith will enter Paradise." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went out from there and announced, "Beware! Only the people of faith will enter Paradise." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration is evidence that faith increases due to good deeds and decreases due to sins. It also contains evidence that sometimes, due to the commission of a sin, the term 'faith' is negated from a believing person, but complete faith is not negated. Just as if a person performs a good deed, the term 'faith' is used for him, but complete faith is not meant by it.
