Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, we set out with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). We did not obtain gold or silver as spoils of war; we only received land, clothes, and equipment. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Wadi al-Qura. Sayyiduna Rifa’ah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) presented the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with a black slave as a gift, whose name was Mid’am. We continued our journey until we reached Wadi al-Qura, where Mid’am was unloading the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) camel. At that moment, a stray arrow came and struck him, and he died. The people congratulated him on entering Paradise, but the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Never! By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the cloak he took from the spoils of Khaybar before it was distributed is now burning upon him as fire.” When the people heard this, a man brought a strap or two straps to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This strap is made of fire” (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), “these two straps are made of fire.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) had accepted Islam in the tribe of Daws. Then, when he came to Madinah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had already set out for Khaybar, and the caretaker of Madinah was Siba’ bin ‘Arfatah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him), whom the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed as his deputy. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed behind Sayyiduna Siba’ (may Allah be pleased with him) and heard him reciting “Woe to those who give less [in measure]” (Surah Al-Mutaffifin). Then he went to Khaybar, met the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and participated in the Battle of Khaybar with him.
