Hadith 4838

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, the people of the Hawazin tribe brought goats and camels; they formed two rows so that they could attack the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with greater intensity. The narrator states: When the Muslims and the polytheists confronted each other, (some) Muslims turned their backs and retreated, just as Allah Almighty has mentioned. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Then Allah Almighty repelled the polytheists, even though this did not happen because of us killing them with swords or wounding them with spears. On that day, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has killed a disbeliever, his equipment will belong to him." Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed twenty men that day and acquired their equipment. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I struck the neck of a disbeliever who was wearing armor. (Then he was killed) but I could not obtain his armor. Now, please see who has it? Then a man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have acquired it. Please make him pleased with me and grant it to me. (Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates) It was the noble habit of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that whenever something was asked from him, he would either grant it or remain silent (i.e., he would not say "no"). At this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke: It will not happen that Allah Almighty has granted His lion that (armor) as war booty and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gives it to you. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: Umar has spoken the truth. (Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: On this occasion) Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her); she had a dagger with her. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Umm Sulaym! Why do you have this? She replied: I intended that if any polytheist came near me, I would stab him in the belly with it. So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Did you hear what Umm Sulaym is saying? Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I will kill those freed captives with it who turned their backs and deserted you. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Umm Sulaym! Indeed, Allah Almighty has sufficed and has made the outcome excellent.
