Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of the Battle of Hunayn, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has killed a disbeliever, then his belongings will belong to him." Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed twenty men that day, and he obtained the belongings of all of them. Then Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I struck a disbeliever on his shoulder and he was wearing armor. Then a man said: I have taken the belongings (of that slain man), so please satisfy him on my behalf and grant me those belongings. (Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates) Whenever anything was asked from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he would either give it or remain silent. On this occasion too, he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! It will not happen that Allah grants one of His lions something from the spoils of war and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gives it to you. So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: Umar has spoken the truth.
