Qatadah narrates: Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated before us the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him). On the occasion of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered regarding the twenty-four leaders of the Quraysh, so they were thrown into a pit at Badr. Whenever the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prevailed over a people, he liked to stay in their area for three nights. When the third day came, according to the command of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), saddles were placed on his mounts, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out and his companions followed him. The people said: We think the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is going for some task, until the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the edge of that pit. He (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed them (the disbelievers of Quraysh) by their names and the names of their fathers: O so-and-so son of so-and-so, do you not wish now that you had obeyed Allah and His Messenger? Our Lord promised us what we found to be true. Did you find the promise your Lord made to you to be true? Then Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! How are you addressing bodies in which there is no soul? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul, what I am saying, you do not hear it more than they do (i.e., they are hearing it just as you are hearing it). The narrator named Qatadah says: Allah Almighty gave them life so that they could hear (the voice of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) so that they would be rebuked, their inferiority would be made manifest, they would be humiliated, regretful, and remorseful.
