Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). We did not know what kind of army the enemy had prepared for us. We reached the valley of Hunayn; this was in the morning. It was a low-lying valley among the valleys of Tihamah. People were descending into it. The narrator says: By Allah! The people were being pursued but they did not know it. Meanwhile, contingents began to appear from all sides, so the people did not wait to retreat in defeat. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned to the right and said, "O people, where are you going? I am the Messenger of Allah, I am Muhammad bin Abdullah." (Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates:) There was a heavyset man at the front of the Hawazin tribe, riding a red camel. He had a black flag in his hand. Whenever someone reached him, he would strike him with a spear, and whenever anything came before him, he would push it behind him. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and a man from the Ansar both lay in wait for him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) attacked the back of the camel, so the (chief) fell down on his neck. The Ansari struck his shin and cut his foot near the middle of the shin. When he fell, fighting broke out among the people until they were defeated. He was the maternal half-brother of Safwan bin Umayyah. They said: "Beware! Today magic has been proven false." Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a polytheist at that time. Later, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) struck him (on his chest, etc.). Sayyiduna Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Be quiet. May Allah shut your mouth. By Allah! If any man from Quraysh meets me, it is more beloved to me than if any man from the Hawazin tribe meets me."
