Abdullah bin Rabah narrates: During the month of Ramadan, some delegations came to the service of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), among whom I and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) were also included. We used to prepare food for each other. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) would often invite us to his residence. I said: If I also prepare food and then invite these people to my residence, (that would be appropriate). I ordered the food to be prepared. The food was prepared. In the evening, I met Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). I said: O Abu Hurairah! Tonight the invitation is at my place. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have preceded me. The narrator says: I also invited those people to my residence. Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I not narrate to you a hadith? I will narrate to you a hadith which, O group of Ansar, is your hadith. Meanwhile, the food will also arrive. Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the conquest of Makkah. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came and was about to enter Makkah, so he sent Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) to one side of the army and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to the left side, and appointed Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) as the commander of one detachment. They reached the low-lying area while the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was with his small detachment. The Quraysh sent their ruffians and follower boys towards this detachment. They said: We will give these people a chance; if they win, we will be with them, and if they are killed, we will give whatever is demanded. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked around and saw me, so he said: O Abu Hurairah, call the Ansar for me; only the Ansar should come to me. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) called them, and they came and gathered around the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Have you seen the ruffians and follower boys of the Quraysh? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) struck his right hand on his left and said: Cut them down until you meet me at Safa. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out, and whoever among us wanted to kill anyone among them, he killed him, until none of them appeared before us. Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! The killing of the Quraysh has been permitted; after today, the Quraysh will not remain. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever closes his door will be safe, and whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan will be in peace. So the people closed their doors. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) touched the Black Stone and performed Tawaf of the Ka'bah. In his blessed hand was a bow. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was holding that bow. In one corner of the Ka'bah was an idol which they used to worship. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) struck its side with his bow and recited: "Truth has come and falsehood has vanished." When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) completed the Tawaf, he went to Safa and ascended it, until when his gaze fell upon the Ka'bah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his hands and praised Allah and mentioned whatever Allah willed. The Ansar were present below Safa. One of them said to another: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has developed love for his hometown and his family. Revelation used to descend upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When revelation would descend upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), this would not remain hidden from us. At that time, no one could look towards the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He would wait until the revelation was complete. When the revelation upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was completed, he said: O group of Ansar, you have said this statement: This person has been overtaken by love for his hometown and his family. The people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We have said this. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Beware! I am Allah's servant and His Messenger. I have migrated towards Allah and towards you. My life is with you and my death is with you. So the Ansar began to weep and started saying: By Allah! We said this only out of love for Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah and His Messenger confirm you and accept your excuse. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This narration is a clear statement that Makkah was conquered as a result of war, not as a result of a treaty.
