Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A tray of dates was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he recited this verse: "The example of a good word is like a good tree, whose root is firm and its branches are high. It gives its fruit every season by the permission of its Lord." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This refers to the date palm tree. (Then he recited this verse:) "The example of a bad word is like a bad tree, which is uprooted from the surface of the earth and has no stability." He said: This refers to the colocynth (bitter apple) tree. A man named Shu'ayb says: I related this to Abu'l-‘Aliyah, and he said: We have also heard it in this way. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The words of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "They brought a qina‘ juz’ to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)," refer to a tray of dates, because the people of Madinah use the word "qina‘" for a tray, and the word "juz’" for dates.
