Sulaiman bin Buraidah narrates from his father: Whenever the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) appointed a commander over an army or a detachment, he would especially advise him to fear Allah regarding his own self and to do good to the fellow Muslims with him. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say: Fight in the way of Allah, in the name of Allah, and fight those who disbelieve in Allah. However, do not be treacherous, do not break your promises, do not mutilate the dead bodies, and do not kill children. When you encounter your enemy from among the polytheists, invite them to three things. Whichever of these they accept, accept it from them and do not attack them. First, invite them to Islam; if they accept, then accept it from them and refrain from fighting them. Or invite them to leave their land and move to the land of the emigrants (Muhajirin); if they refuse to migrate, then inform them that if they do so, they will have the same status as the Bedouin emigrants and all the commands of Allah that apply to the emigrants will also apply to them. If they accept this, then accept it from them; but if they refuse, then seek Allah’s help against them and begin fighting them. When you besiege a fortress and its people want you to grant them protection in the name of Allah and His Messenger, do not grant them the protection of Allah and His Messenger, but grant them your own protection, or the protection of your forefathers and your companions. For if you violate your own or your forefathers’ protection, it is easier for you than violating the protection given in the name of Allah and His Messenger. And when you besiege a fortress and its people want you to make a treaty with them according to Allah’s command, do not decide according to Allah’s command, for you do not know whether you will judge in accordance with Allah’s command regarding them or not. The narrator says: I narrated this hadith to Muqatil bin Hayyan, and he said: Muslim has narrated a similar hadith to me from Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Muqarrin (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
