Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the Battle of Ahzab (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) or the Battle of Uhud, we confronted the polytheists. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) appointed a group of archers and made Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) their leader. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not move from your place, even if you see us prevailing over them. Even if you see them prevailing over us, do not come to help us (i.e., do not advance to help us, remain at your place). The narrator says: When we confronted the enemy and the Muslims forced them to retreat, I saw (the disbelievers’) women running up the mountain, lifting their garments so that their anklets were visible. Then those (archers) also advanced and said: Seize the spoils, seize the spoils. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: Stay where you are, do you not remember what the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed you? But they left. When they reached there, Allah changed the situation and ninety Muslims were martyred. Then Abu Sufyan climbed a hill, faced us, and asked: Is Muhammad (peace be upon him) among the people? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not answer him. Then he asked: Is the son of Abu Quhafah (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him) here? He asked this three times. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not answer him. Then he asked: Is Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) among the people? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not answer him. Abu Sufyan turned to his companions and said: These people have been killed, for if they were alive, they would have answered. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) could not restrain himself and said: O enemy of Allah, you have lied! Allah has kept for you that which will disgrace you. Abu Sufyan said: O Hubal, be exalted! O Hubal, be exalted! The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Answer him. The people asked: What should we say? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Say, Allah is Most High and Most Majestic. Abu Sufyan said: Beware, we have Uzza and you have no Uzza. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Answer him. The people asked: What should we answer? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Say, Allah is our Helper and you have no helper. Abu Sufyan said: Today is in exchange for the day of Badr, and the situation in war keeps changing. You will find some mutilation among your dead. I did not order this, but I do not dislike it either. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, it is mentioned that ninety people were martyred, whereas seventy were actually martyred.
