Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A horse is a source of reward for one man, a means of protection for another, and a cause of sin for a third. As for the one for whom it is a source of reward, he is the person who keeps a horse for the sake of Allah, and lets it graze in a pasture or garden. Whatever the rope of that horse reaches in the pasture or garden, good deeds are written for him because of it. And if the horse breaks its rope and climbs one or two mounds, then its footprints and its droppings are also counted as good deeds for him. Even if the horse passes by a stream and drinks water from it, though its owner did not intend to give it water, this too becomes a cause of reward for its owner. This is the one for whom it is a source of reward. Another is the person who keeps a horse for the purpose of self-sufficiency and to avoid asking people (for help); such a person does not neglect Allah’s right regarding the horse’s neck and back, so this horse is a means of protection for him. The third is the person who keeps a horse out of pride, showing off, and to boast against the Muslims; for him, it is a cause of sin.” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about donkeys, and he replied: “Nothing specific has been revealed to me regarding them, except this comprehensive verse: ‘Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.’” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The word ‘nawa’ means to show arrogance and pride for anyone other than Allah, and arrogance and pride for the sake of Allah (seeking His pleasure) are praiseworthy, because both are related to being pleased with good deeds, while the other is related to being pleased with worldly matters.
