Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man submitted, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! A person intends to perform jihad in the way of Allah and along with it, he also wants to gain some worldly benefit." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Such a person will not receive any reward." This matter became a cause of great concern for the people. The people said to that man, "Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) this question again, perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not understand your meaning." The narrator states: That man submitted, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! A person intends to perform jihad in the way of Allah and also wants to gain some worldly benefit." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "He will not receive any reward." This matter became a cause of great concern for the people. They said to that man, "Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) this question again." That man asked for the third time, "A person intends to perform jihad in the way of Allah and through it, he also wants to gain some worldly benefit." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "He will not receive any reward."
