أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبِرْنَا بِعَمَلٍ يَعْدِلُ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ . قَالَ : " لا تُطِيقُونَهُ " . قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبِرْنَا لَعَلَّنَا نُطِيقُهُ . قَالَ : " مَثَلُ الْمُجَاهِدِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، كَمَثَلِ الْقَانِتِ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ ، لا يَفْتُرُ مِنْ صَوْمٍ وَلا صَدَقَةٍ ، حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ الْمُجَاهِدُ إِِلَى أَهْلِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The people said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tell us of a deed that is equal to striving in the path of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You do not have the ability to do that." The people said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tell us, perhaps we may be able to do it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The example of one who strives in the path of Allah is like that of a fasting person who stands (in prayer) reciting the verses of Allah, and he does not pause in his fasting or charity (and he continues to perform voluntary prayers and fasts) until the warrior returns to his home."
