Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was present near the pulpit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said: I do not care if, after accepting Islam, I do no other deed except that I populate the Sacred Mosque, or go for Hajj or ‘Umrah to the House of Allah. Another person said: Striving in the path of Allah is more virtuous than what you have mentioned. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: “Do you consider the providing of water to the pilgrims and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram as equal to the one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the way of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”
