أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ هُوَ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَيْشًا ، وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَجُلا ، فَأَوْقَدَ نَارًا ، فَقَالَ : ادْخُلُوهَا ، فَأَرَادَ نَاسٌ أَنْ يَدْخُلُوهَا ، وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ : إِِنَّا فَرَرْنَا مِنْهَا ، فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ لِلَّذِينَ أَرَادُوا أَنْ يَدْخُلُوهَا : لَوْ دَخَلْتُمُوهَا لَمْ تَزَالُوا فِيهَا إِِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ، أَوْ قَالَ : أَبَدًا . وَقَالَ لِلآخَرِينَ : خَيْرًا . وَقَالَ : أَحْسَنْتُمْ " لا طَاعَةَ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ اللَّهِ ، إِِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an expedition and appointed a man as their leader. They lit a fire, so the leader said: "Enter into it." Some people intended to enter it, but others said: "We have only become Muslims to escape from this (the fire)." Later, this matter was mentioned to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). To those who intended to enter the fire, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had entered it, you would have remained in it until the Day of Resurrection." (The narrator is in doubt; perhaps these are the words:) "You would have remained in it forever." And to the others, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You did well." (The narrator is in doubt; perhaps these are the words:) "You acted excellently." There is no obedience (to a ruler) in disobedience to Allah; obedience is only in good deeds.
