Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the delegation of the tribe of Abdul Qais came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We belong to the tribe of Rabi'ah, and between us and you are the disbelievers of the tribe of Mudar, so we can only come to you during the sacred months. Please command us with something that we can teach to the people of our tribe who are behind us, and at that time, when we adopt it and act upon it, we may enter Paradise through it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I command you with four things and forbid you from four things. (I command you) to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to give the fifth (khums) from the spoils of war. And I forbid you from four things: Dubba', Hantam, Muzaffat, Naqir. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What do you know about Naqir? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You hollow out the trunk of a date-palm and put dried dates or dates in it, then you pour water over it until it ferments, then when it settles, you drink it, and it may happen (after drinking it in a state of intoxication) that a person kills his cousin with his sword. The narrator says: One of those present had done this, and he says: Out of shyness before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I concealed this matter. The people asked: Then what do you command us, O Messenger of Allah, what should we drink? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Drink water from a leather waterskin whose mouth is tied. The people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! There are many rats in our land; they do not leave anything made of leather intact. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Even if a rat has bitten it—he said this two or three times. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the chief of the tribe of Abdul Qais: You have two qualities which Allah loves: forbearance and dignity.
