Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) conquered Khaybar, Sayyiduna Hajjaj bin Alat (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I have land in Makkah and my family and children are also there. I wish to go to them. Please grant me permission that I may (as a ruse) speak against you or say something (untrue). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) granted him permission to say whatever he wished. The narrator states: When he came to his wife, he said: Gather together whatever you have and give it to me. I wish to buy goats from Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions because they are in need of them and their wealth has been destroyed. The narrator states: This news spread in Makkah, which greatly saddened the Muslims and brought a wave of joy among the polytheists. This news also reached Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), so he remained seated where he was and could not even stand up. The narrator named Maqsim has reported this. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) took his son Qutham, who resembled the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) laid him down with himself, placed him on his chest, and said: "My beloved Qutham, who resembles the dying person (i.e., the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who is the Prophet sent by that Lord who bestows blessings, no matter how much anyone dislikes it." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then he sent his son to Sayyiduna Hajjaj bin Alat (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: May you be ruined! What news have you brought and what are you spreading? The news you have brought, Allah Almighty had not promised good in this form. So Hajjaj said to the slave of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): Convey my greetings to Sayyiduna Abu al-Fadl (i.e., Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him) and tell him to give me an opportunity to meet him in private at his house. He will receive such news that will make him happy. The slave of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and when he reached the door, he said: O Abu al-Fadl, accept glad tidings! So Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) became extremely happy, to the extent that he kissed him between his two eyes. He told Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) what Hajjaj had told him, so Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) set the slave free. Then Hajjaj came and informed Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the situation: that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had conquered Khaybar, and they had obtained the spoils of war, and Allah’s share had also been set aside from their wealth, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had chosen Lady Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) for himself. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave this woman the choice: if she wished, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would set her free and marry her, otherwise she could return to her family. So the woman chose that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) should set her free and marry her. (Hajjaj said) I have come here because of my wealth which is here. I wish to gather it and take it with me. I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for permission, so he granted me permission to say whatever I wished. You should keep this matter secret for three days, after which you may mention it as you see fit. The narrator states: His wife gathered together whatever was present, including jewelry and belongings, and handed it over to him. So he set off with that property. After three days, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the wife of Sayyiduna Hajjaj (may Allah be pleased with him) and inquired: How is your husband? The woman told him that he had left. The woman said: O Abu al-Fadl, may Allah protect you from disgrace. The news that reached you was very hard for us. So Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, may Allah protect me from disgrace, but by Allah’s grace, what we desire will happen. Hajjaj had told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had conquered Khaybar, and Allah’s share had been set aside in Khaybar, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had chosen Lady Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) for himself. And if you wish to go to your husband, then go to him. The woman said: By Allah! This is what I thought about you, that you are telling the truth. So Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am indeed telling the truth, and the situation is exactly as I have told you. The narrator states: Then Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) left from there and came to the gathering of the Quraysh. They were saying: O Abu al-Fadl, you have always been met with good. So Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Even now, by Allah’s grace, only good has come to me. Hajjaj told me that Allah Almighty has granted victory over Khaybar to His Messenger, and Allah’s share has been set aside in it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has chosen Lady Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) for himself. Hajjaj said to me: I should keep this matter hidden for three days. Hajjaj had come here to collect his belongings, and then he left. The narrator states: So the worry that the Muslims had regarding the polytheists, Allah Almighty removed it, and all the Muslims who were hiding in their homes came out, until they came to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) informed them of the real situation, so the Muslims became very happy, and the grief, worry, and distress they had regarding the polytheists, Allah Almighty removed it.
