Lady Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) married me at a time when he neither owned any land nor any slave. He only had a camel and a horse. Lady Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I used to feed his horse and take care of it. I used to pick date stones for his camel and provide it with fodder, give it water, and prepare a bucket (for water) for it. I would knead the dough, but I could not make bread properly, so my Ansari neighbors would make bread for me; they were very sincere women. I used to carry date stones on my head from the land of Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), the land which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had given to Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), and it was at a distance of two-thirds of a farsakh.
Lady Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: One day I was coming (home) with date stones on my head when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) met me. Some of his companions were also with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called me and said: "Akh" (i.e., he made the camel kneel) so that he could make me ride behind him. Lady Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I felt shy to go with men, and I also thought of Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) and his temperament, for he was very quick-tempered. Lady Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) realized that I was feeling shy, so he left. Then I came to Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him that I had met the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I had date stones on my head, and some of his companions were with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had stopped his camel so that I could ride with him, but I felt shy, and I also thought of your temperament. So Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Your carrying the date stones is more burdensome to me than your riding with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Lady Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Until after that, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me a servant who used to take care of the horse in my place, so it was as if he had set me free.
