Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: I have committed adultery. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sent him back several times. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked the people of his tribe: Does he have any illness? It was said that he has no illness, but his condition is such that he believes the only expiation for the crime he has committed is that the prescribed punishment be carried out on him. The narrator states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ordered us, so we took him towards Baqi’ Gharqad. The narrator states: We did not dig any pit for him, nor did we tie him up. We started stoning him with stones, bones, and clods of earth. The narrator says: When he was hurt, he ran away and we also ran after him, until he stopped near a stony ground. We continued to stone him until he died. In the evening, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon. After praising and glorifying Allah, he said: As for what follows! "What is wrong with people that when we go out to participate in a battle, one of them stays behind with our families and, like a male animal, tries to attract (a woman) by making sounds? It is incumbent upon me that if any such person is brought to me, I will give him an exemplary punishment." The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) neither spoke ill of that person nor prayed for his forgiveness.
