Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once, some guests came to us. My father used to converse with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for a long time after the Isha prayer. When he was about to go (to the service of the Prophet, peace be upon him), he said: O Abdur Rahman, feed the guests. When evening came, I brought food to them, but they refused to eat and said: We will not eat until your father returns home and eats with us. I said: He is a man who gets angry; if you do not eat, I fear he will beat me. But the guests did not accept this. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he asked: Have you people eaten? The guests replied: No, by Allah! (We have not eaten.) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did I not instruct Abdur Rahman (to feed you)? Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I had moved aside. He (Abu Bakr) said loudly: I adjure you, if you can hear my voice, come here. So I came. I said: By Allah! I am not at fault; these are your guests, you may ask them. I brought food to them, but they refused to eat until you came. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is the reason you did not accept the food? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) then said: By Allah! Tonight I will not eat food. The guests said: By Allah! We too will not eat until you eat. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have never seen a difficult situation like tonight. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for the first oath, that was from Satan. You people come to the food. Then the food was brought, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) recited Bismillah and ate, and the guests also ate. The next day, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) presented himself to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! These people did good, and I became a violator (of my oath). So the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: You are more righteous and better than all of them.
