Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to him and asked him for some expenditure, so he said: I have nothing to give you except this coat of mail and this helmet. I will write a note to my family so that they may give you something. The man was not satisfied with this, so Sayyiduna ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) swore that he would not give him anything. Then the man agreed to this, so Sayyiduna ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I had not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say this: “Whoever takes an oath and then sees that something else is closer to piety with Allah, then he should do that which is more pious,” (Sayyiduna ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: If this hadith had not been there) I would not have broken my oath.
