أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي نَبْهَانُ مَوْلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، أَنَّ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ كَاتَبَتْهُ فَبَقِيَ مِنْ كِتَابَتِهِ أَلْفَا دِرْهَمٍ ، قَالَ نَبْهَانُ : كُنْتُ أَمْسِكُهَا لِكَيْ لا تَحْتَجِبَ عَنِّي أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَ : فَحَجَجْتُ ، فَرَأَيْتُهَا بِالْبَيْدَاءِ ، فَقَالَتْ لِي : مَنْ ذَا ؟ فَقُلْتُ : أَنَا أَبُو يَحْيَى . فَقَالَتْ لِي : أَيْ بُنَيَّ ، تَدْعُو إِِلَيَّ ابْنَ أَخِي مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ وَتُعْطِي فِي نِكَاحِهِ الَّذِي لِي عَلَيْكَ ، وَأَنَا أَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلامَ . قَالَ : فَبَكَيْتُ وَصِحْتُ ، وَقُلْتُ : وَاللَّهِ لا أَدْفَعُهَا إِِلَيْهِ أَبَدًا . فَقَالَتْ : أَيْ بُنَيَّ ، إِِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ مُكَاتَبِ إِِحْدَاكُنَّ مَا يَقْضِي عَنْهُ فَاحْتَجِبِي " . فَوَاللَّهِ لا تَرَانِي إِِلا أَنْ تَرَانِي فِي الآخِرَةِ .
Nihan, the freed slave of Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) made a contract of manumission with him, and two thousand dirhams from the amount of his contract remained unpaid. Nihan says: I did not pay her so that Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) would not start observing veiling from me. The narrator states: I went for Hajj and saw her at the place of Baida, so she inquired from me: Who is it? I replied: I am Abu Yahya. She then said to me: O my son, call my nephew Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abu Umayyah to me and spend in his marriage the amount that I was to take from you, and I send you greetings of peace. Nihan says: I began to weep and my voice broke; I said: By Allah! I will never pay her this amount. She then said: O my son, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this: "When any of your female slaves' mukatab (contracted slave) has so much wealth with him that he can pay off (the amount of his contract), then you should observe veiling from this mukatab slave." (Lady Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:) By Allah! Now you will only see me in the Hereafter.
