أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِِدْرِيسَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا وَهِيَ حَامِلٌ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : آخِرُ الأَجَلَيْنِ . وَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ إِِذَا وَلَدَتْ فَقَدْ حَلَّتْ . فَدَخَلَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، فَسَأَلَهَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَتْ : " وَلَدَتْ سُبَيْعَةُ الأَسْلَمِيَّةُ بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ زَوْجِهَا بِنِصْفِ شَهْرٍ ، فَخَطَبَهَا رَجُلانِ أَحَدُهُمَا شَابٌّ وَالآخَرُ كَهْلٌ ، فَحَطَّتْ إِِلَى الشَّابِّ ، فَقَالَ الْكَهْلُ : لَمْ تَحْلُلْ ، وَكَانَ أَهْلُهَا غَيْبًا وَرَجَا إِِذَا جَاءَ أَهْلُهَا أَنْ يُؤْثِرُوهُ بِهَا ، فَجَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " قَدْ حَلَلْتِ ، فَانْكِحِي مَنْ شِئْتِ " .
Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates: It was asked from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) about a widow who is pregnant. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The waiting period (iddah) that is completed later (the woman will complete that waiting period). Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When she gives birth to the child, her waiting period will be considered complete. Then Abu Salamah went to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about this matter. She informed: A woman named Subai’ah Aslamiyyah gave birth to a child fifteen days after her husband’s death. Two men sent her a marriage proposal; one of them was young and the other was elderly. The woman inclined towards the young man, so the elderly man said: Your waiting period is not yet over. The woman’s family members were not present there. The old man hoped that when her family members would arrive, they would give him preference (over the young man). The woman went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have become lawful (i.e., your waiting period is over), now you may marry whomever you wish.
