Sayyida Fari’ah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Her husband Rabee’ah was in a village near Madinah. He went after some of his (runaway) slaves, and those slaves killed him. That woman came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and, due to living far from the populated area, mentioned her fear. She mentioned that she was living in a house that was not her property. That woman sought permission from the Prophet (peace be upon him) to come to her brothers in Madinah. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) granted her permission. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked her to repeat the situation. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to her: Remain in that house where the news of his (your husband’s) death reached you, until your waiting period (‘iddah) is completed.
