Ubaidullah bin Abdullah narrates regarding Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud’s (may Allah be pleased with him) umm walad, Sayyidah Raytah: She was a skilled woman. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) did not have wealth, so this woman used to spend the earnings from her skill on Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his children. Once, she said: “By Allah! You and your children have not left me capable of giving charity; I am not able to give charity while you are present.” Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “If there is no reward in this, then I do not like that you do so.” So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and his wife asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter. The woman said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I am a woman who has a skill, and I sell my work. My husband, my children, and I have no other source of income. Because of them, I am not able to give charity. Will I get a reward for spending on them?” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You will get a reward for whatever you spend on them. Continue spending on them.”
