Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) separated himself from his wives, I entered the mosque where people were stirring pebbles and saying, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has divorced his wives." This was before the command of hijab was revealed. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says (I thought), "Today I will definitely find out about this matter." I went to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said, "O daughter of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)! Has your matter reached this point that you hurt Allah and His Messenger?" Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "O son of Khattab! What do I have to do with you? Mind your own house." Then I went to Hafsa bint Umar and said, "O Hafsa, has your matter reached this point that you hurt Allah and His Messenger? I know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not love you, and if it were not for me, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have divorced you." At this, Hafsa began to cry loudly. I asked, "Where is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" She told me, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is resting in the upper room." I went there and found the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) servant Rabah sitting on the stairs of the upper room. He had stretched his feet on the plank made of palm trunks. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would ascend and descend using it. I addressed him, "O Rabah! Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission for me to enter." He looked towards the upper room, then at me, and gave no reply. I said, "O Rabah! Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission for me to enter. I think perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) thinks I have come because of Hafsa. By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah commands me to behead her, I will behead her." I said this loudly. (The boy went up and sought permission) and then signaled to me, so I entered the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying on a mat. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says, "I sat there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was only wearing a waistcloth, nothing else was on his body, and the mark of the mat was visible on his side. When I looked around the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) room, there was about a sa' of barley and about a sa' of tree leaves, and there was an 'afiq' present." Abu Hafs, the narrator, says: "'Afiq' refers to a hide whose hair has been removed but has not yet been tanned." (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says) "Tears began to flow from my eyes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, 'O son of Khattab, why are you crying?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, why should I not cry? This mat has left marks on your side, and what I see in your room, while Caesar and Chosroes live among fruits and rivers (i.e., in blessings), and you are the Messenger of Allah and His beloved, and your belongings are so few.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'O son of Khattab, are you not pleased that for us is the Hereafter and for them is the world?' I said, 'Yes.' (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says) "When I entered the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I saw signs of anger on his face. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Do not worry about these women, for if you divorce them, Allah, His angels, Jibreel, Mika'il, I, and Abu Bakr are with you.' (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says) "Many times it happened that I said something praising Allah and hoped that Allah would confirm it, so the verse regarding giving the choice was revealed: 'And if he (the Messenger) divorces you (i.e., the pure wives), Allah will give him wives better than you.' (And in another place it is said:) 'And if both of them (try to pressure the Messenger), then indeed Allah is his helper.' Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyidah Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) wanted to pressure the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding his other wives. (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says) "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Have you divorced them?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'No.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), may I go back and inform the people that you have not divorced them?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Yes, if you wish.' After that, I kept talking to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until his anger subsided and signs of a good mood appeared on his face, and he began to smile. His smile was very beautiful. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the upper room. I supported myself on the trunk while coming down, although the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) descended as if walking on level ground and did not even touch it with his hand. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you have been residing in the upper room for twenty-nine days.' Then I stood at the door of the mosque and announced in a loud voice, 'The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has not divorced his wives.' So regarding this, the verse was revealed: 'And when there comes to them some matter regarding security or fear, they spread it.' The verse continues: 'But if they had referred it to the Messenger or to those of authority among them, then the ones who can draw correct conclusions among them would have known about it.' (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says) "So I am the one who drew the conclusion in this matter, so Allah revealed the verse regarding giving the choice."
