Rabi’ bin Sabrah narrates: His father participated in a battle with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He narrates: I and a man from my tribe set out; in terms of beauty, I had superiority over him, and that man was close to being ugly. Each of us had a cloak; as for my cloak, it was old, and as for my cousin’s cloak, it was completely new. Until we came to the lower area of Makkah (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these words are: the upper area), we met a young woman who seemed to be a virgin. We said: Can we contract Mut’ah marriage with you? She replied: What will you spend (i.e., what dowry will you give)? So each of us spread out his cloak. The woman looked towards the other man (who was ugly), then when that man saw that the woman was looking at me with interest, he said: His cloak is old, my cloak is completely new. The woman said: There is no harm in this cloak either. I contracted Mut’ah marriage with her, then I separated from her at the time when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made it (i.e., Mut’ah marriage) unlawful.
