It is narrated about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to him and inquired about a person who married a woman and then that man passed away; he had neither consummated the marriage with her nor fixed a dowry for her. Upon this, Sayyiduna Abdullah did not give him any answer. A month passed, then he stated: "I am going to express my opinion on this matter; if it is correct, it will be from Allah Almighty, and if it is wrong, it will be from myself. My opinion regarding this woman is: she will receive a dowry equal to that of other women like her, in which there will be neither any increase nor decrease, and it will be obligatory for her to observe the waiting period ('iddah), and she will receive a share from the inheritance." Then so-and-so from the Ashja' tribe stood up and stated: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a similar verdict regarding Barwa' bint Washiq." The narrator says, so Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was pleased with this and he said takbeer (Allahu Akbar).
