Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed, “The believers who sit (at home) are not equal...” the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring Zayd to me. He came with a tablet and inkpot (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), or a shoulder blade and inkpot. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Write this: “The believers who sit (at home) and those who strive in the way of Allah are not equal.” The narrator says: At that time, behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyiduna Amr bin Umm Maktum, who was blind. He said: O Messenger of Allah! What do you command me, for I am a blind man? Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: At that very place, the words of the verse were revealed: “Except those who are afflicted (with disability).”
