Abdullah bin Ma’qil narrates: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked him about the statement of Allah Almighty: “Then its compensation is fasting, or giving charity, or offering a sacrifice.” So Sayyiduna Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) informed: I was brought to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while lice were falling on my face. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I did not think that your suffering had increased to the extent that I am now seeing. Do you have a goat? I replied: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then fast for three days, or feed six needy people, giving each needy person half a sa‘ (measure). Sayyiduna Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: So this verse was revealed specifically about me, but its ruling is general for all of you.
