Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There was a devout worshipper among the Children of Israel who used to worship in his place of worship for sixty years. Once, it rained and the land became lush and green. The monk looked out from his place of worship and thought, ‘If I go down and remember Allah Almighty, I will attain more goodness.’ Then he came down from there, and with him was one or perhaps two loaves of bread. As soon as he reached the land, he met a woman. The monk began to talk to this woman, and she began to talk to him, until he committed adultery with her. Then, when he was overcome with remorse, he went down into a well to bathe. Meanwhile, a beggar came to him, so he gestured with his hand for him to take those two loaves, or one loaf. Then the monk died, and his sixty years of worship were weighed against that one act of adultery, and the adultery outweighed his good deeds. Then the one or two loaves were placed with his good deeds, and the scale of his good deeds became heavier, and the man was forgiven.”
Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This narration was heard by the narrator Ghalib bin Wazir from the narrator Waki’ in Bayt al-Maqdis. He did not narrate this in Iraq. This is one of those narrations which the people of Palestine uniquely narrate from Waki’.
