Imam Zain al-Abidin, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates this statement of Sayyidah Safiyyah, may Allah be pleased with her. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was in i'tikaf. I came to visit you at night and remained in your service, conversing with you. Then, when I stood up to return, you stood up with me to see me off. The house of Sayyidah Safiyyah, may Allah be pleased with her, was near the house of Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zaid, may Allah be pleased with them both. Sayyidah Safiyyah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrates: Two men from the Ansar saw us. When they saw the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, they lowered their heads. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Wait! This is Safiyyah bint Huyayy (who is my wife). Both of them said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Glory be to Allah! (Could we think such a thing about you?) The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Satan runs in the veins of man like blood. I feared that he might cast a thought into your hearts (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) or cast an evil thought.
