Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I asked him about fasting. He said: Fast one day in a month and you will get the reward for the rest. I said: I have the strength for more than that. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Fast three days in a month and you will get the reward for the rest. I said: I have the strength for more than that. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The most beloved way of fasting to Allah is the way of Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him); he would fast one day and not fast the next day. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "Fast one day in a month and you will get the reward for the rest," means: you will get the reward for what remains out of the thirty days, and their ruling will be the same in this way, because it is not possible that as a person's effort increases, his reward decreases accordingly.
