أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحِيَى بْنِ زُهَيْرٍ ، بِتُسْتَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الُوَلِيدِ الْكَرْخِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مِينَاءٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو ، بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَصُومُ النَّهَارَ وَتَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ ، فَلا تَفْعَلْ ، فَإِنَّ لِجَسَدِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا ، وَإِنَّ لِنَفْسِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا ، صُمْ وَأَفْطِرْ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ ، صَوْمُ الدَّهْرِ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي أَجِدُ قُوَّةً ، قَالَ : " صُمْ صَوْمَ دَاوُدَ ، صُمْ يَوْمًا وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا " ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، يَقُولُ : يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ أَخَذْتُ الرُّخْصَةَ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abdullah bin Amr! I have come to know that you observe voluntary fasts every day and spend the whole night in voluntary prayers. Do not do so; your body has a right over you, your soul has a right over you. Observe (voluntary) fasts and also leave them. Fast three days in every month, and it will be as if you have fasted the whole (i.e., the entire month). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have the strength. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then fast according to the way of Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him). Fast one day and leave one day. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I wish I had accepted the concession.
