Simak bin Harb narrates: I came to Ikrimah on a day about which there was doubt as to whether it was a day of Ramadan. He was eating food that day. He said: Come forward and eat food. I said: I am fasting. He said: By Allah! You will surely come forward. I said: Then narrate to me a hadith about this matter. So he informed me: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated this hadith to me. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not welcome (the month of) Ramadan by fasting before it (i.e., do not start fasting before its beginning). Start fasting by sighting it (i.e., the crescent of the first of Ramadan), and celebrate Eid al-Fitr by sighting it. If there is a cloud barrier between you and it (the crescent), or there is difficulty in sighting, then complete the count to thirty."
